Cosmetic & Ophthalmic Eye Surgery Centre:
Chemical Peels

Chemical peels reduce fine wrinkles, scars, blemishes, freckles and stimulate collagen and elastin growth by using a chemical exfoliating solution. This helps to peel away the outer layers of the skin, which allows new skin to regenerate. Chemical peel is best used on the facial skin.

Superficial Chemical Peels: Superficial peels using Alpha hydroxyacids / Glycolic (naturally occurring acids found in fruits) are the mildest types of chemical peels. These peels are excellent for improving a fresher and younger look with a reduction of imperfections on the skin such as acne, sun-damaged skin and improves skin texture and fine wrinkles. Superficial chemical peels are ideal for individuals in their 20’s and 30’s with early signs of ageing. Superficial chemical peels do not produce dramatic changes and are not long lasting. Results can only really be seen after repeated peels. Down time is minimal.

How to prepare for the treatment?

Avoid any exfoliating, tanning or sun beds.
Proceed with your normal skin routine and avoid any changes 1 – 2 weeks prior to peel treatment.

What happens during the treatment?

Superficial Chemical Peels: The skin is cleaned with an agent to remove excess oils. Eyes, ears, lips and clothing are covered for protection. AHA is applied evenly to the skin for several minutes depending on the strength of the solution and the desired depth of the peel. Water is applied to neutralize and end the chemical process. The solution is then wiped off. A fan can be used to help decrease the intensity of the burning sensation on the skin.

The surgeon will repeat this at one to three week intervals

What can be expected after the treatment?

Superficial Chemical Peels: Skin will appear pink for a couple of days. After three to five day’s, the skin will shed on the areas where the superficial chemical peel has been applied.

  • Cosmetics should not be applied to the skin during the time of the peel.
  • Clean skin with a mild soap and water followed by an ointment, which will be prescribed by the surgeon.
  • Sun should be avoided until peeling has ended. New skin is very sensitive and more susceptible to sun damage therefore sunscreen should always be applied.
